Practice in Canada

Sonographers planning to work in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia are encouraged to approach the relevant regulator before proceeding with the credentialing process to learn the specific provincial requirements for practice. To practice sonography in a regulated jurisdiction, individuals must hold active registration with the relevant regulator.

In the remaining unregulated provinces or jurisdictions, it is up to the employer to determine hiring requirements. Most employers request applicants have a Sonography Canada credential(s), but some may accept other relevant sonography qualifications, certifications, and/or professional experience. A sonographer can legally practice in an unregulated province if the employer has deemed their skills and education to be sufficient for entry-level practice. If the employer were to require additional qualifications (e.g., Sonography Canada credentials), candidates would be required to meet those requirements for practice.
