Diagnostic medical sonography is becoming increasingly essential to Canada’s healthcare system, supporting timely diagnosis, more efficient care delivery and improved patient outcomes. As the profession grows, so does Sonography Canada—as the national certification body and professional association, we are at a pivotal moment, poised to elevate our influence and visibility within the healthcare sector.

We are seeking a Director of Communications, Engagement & Knowledge Translation to lead national communications, engagement, and knowledge translation initiatives. This senior leadership role is responsible for shaping the narrative, translating evidence into influence, and ensuring the organization’s voice is clear, credible, and recognized by policymakers, regulators, employers, health-system partners, and members.

What You Will Do

  • Lead strategic communications and engagement across digital, print, media, and member channels.
  • Oversee applied research, data gathering, and knowledge mobilization initiatives to ensure evidence informs decisions, policy, professional practice and member services.
  • Build and sustain strategic partnerships and engagement frameworks with external stakeholders — regulators, employers, health-system partners and members.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, providing insight on sector trends, communications, and stakeholder dynamics.
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a multidisciplinary team across communications, engagement, membership marketing, and knowledge translation.

What You Bring

  • Minimum 5 years of senior leadership experience in communications, public affairs, or stakeholder engagement within healthcare, public health, research, or not-for-profit environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex research, clinical, or policy information into clear, actionable messaging.
  • Understanding of the Canadian healthcare system, professional regulation, and health-sector dynamics.
  • Strategic and systems thinking, with the ability to align communications and engagement with organizational and member priorities.
  • Experience with media relations, crisis communications, and government relations or advocacy.
  • Open to learning and adopting AI-driven tools and technologies as they evolve, with a focus on ethical and effective use.
  • Proven leadership of cross-functional or multidisciplinary teams.
  • Degree in communications, public relations, health policy, public health, or related field; master’s preferred. Bilingualism (English/French) is an asset.
  • Proficiency in a MS Office environment, including Sharepoint.
  • Ability to thrive and contribute to a period of transition involving new technology implementation, training, and process refinement.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic imaging or sonography is desirable.
