Sessions:

Pelvic Floor Disorders for the Sonographer

At the conclusion of this presentation, participants:

  •  will have a better understanding of pelvic floor disorders such as genitourinary syndrome of menopause, vaginal prolapse, urinary incontinence, vulvodynia, and myofascial pelvic pain, and their associated treatments. 
  • Will become familiar with the indications for ultrasound in the diagnosis and management of these conditions 
  • Will develop a trauma-informed approach to a pelvic ultrasound examination

Endometriosis on Ultrasound

Learn how to identify and diagnose endometriosis through ultrasound imaging, recognizing key sonographic features and the differentiation of endometriosis from other pelvic pathologies.


Improve proficiency in ultrasound techniques specific to detecting endometriosis, including transvaginal and transabdominal approaches, as well as the use of Doppler imaging.

Promote the adoption of standardized reporting protocols and terminology for ultrasound findings in endometriosis, ensuring consistent and clear communication among healthcare providers.

A Sonographer’s Perspective: Structural Defects of the Uterus and Infertility 

Learning Objectives/Outline:

  • Introduce gynecological ultrasound as the golden standard and the use of advanced scanning for infertility investigations
  • Introduce and describe four main categories: 
  1. Fibroids
  2. Polyps 
  3. Mullerian anomalies
  4. Ashermans/endometrial adhesion’s
  • Define their implications on infertility 
  • Describe their sonographic appearance  (provide images and scanning techniques)

Speakers:

Dr. Erin Kelly

Dr. Erin Kelly is a Urogynecologist at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Alberta. She is also the Fellowship Program Director for the Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery program, and a member of the Health Research Ethics Board – Biomedical Panel at the University of Alberta. Dr. Kelly completed residency and fellowship in FPMRS at Western University. In addition to a full-time academic practice in Urogynecology, Dr. Kelly also provides care through the Chronic Pelvic Pain program at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women. She is an active clinical researcher and her research interests include chronic pelvic pain management, patient education and quality improvement.

Dr. Annick Poirier

Dr. Annick Poirier is a Urogynecologist at the Lois Hole Hospital for Women at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. She also practices at the Lois Hole Hospital Chronic Pelvic Pain program. She is an Associate Clinical Professor within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, and Dentistry at University of Alberta. Dr. Poirier graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Montreal and completed residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at McGill University. She worked as a general Obstetrics/Gynecology physician for 5 years on the Gaspe Peninsula. She completed a Urogynecology Fellowship through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Dr. Poirier is the current Edmonton Zone Section Chief for Urogynecology and Chronic Pelvic Pain. Her research interests include qualitative methodology, global health, access to care, surgical outcomes and chronic pelvic pain.

Dr. Mathew Leonardi

Dr. Mathew Leonardi is an expert in complex gynecology, endometriosis excision surgery and gynaecological ultrasound at McMaster University Medical Centre in Hamilton, Canada. He is an honorary adjunct lecturer at the University of Adelaide. His philosophy of care includes working in an interdisciplinary team and patient-centred decision making. He has been awarded his PhD from the University of Sydney which is focused on the utility of ultrasound in the diagnosis and surgical management of endometriosis. Dr Leonardi is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in his field. He has published over 90 peer reviewed scientific articles, several textbook chapters, and presented at numerous international congresses on endometriosis. He has received numerous awards for his conference presentations on endometriosis. He is an avid researcher, actively contributing academically to the advancement of gynecologic health. Dr. Leonardi is on the World Endometriosis Society Early Career Board and a founding member of the Next Generation Committee at the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is currently contributing to the Clinical Practice Guidelines on Endometriosis for the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada. He is an Associate Editor for Reproduction & Fertility and on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Canada. He is part of an international research group named Imagendo, which won the most prestigious science award in Australia, the 2023 ANSTO Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology.

Ray El-Helou

Ray is a diagnostic medical sonographer that specializes primarily in Maternal Fetal Medicine as well as advanced gynaecology. She is currently full-time at The Ottawa Hospital in the nation’s capital. More recently, she has also become certified in Fetal Echo. Apart from scanning, Ray has a primary role in teaching ultrasound students, various imaging and medical residents, as well as doctors pursing a fellowship in MFM & Gynecology.

Since 2015, she has been advancing her career by attending various ultrasound imaging conferences and local opportunities for continued education.

Recently, Ray began working with Algonquin College’s Diagnotic Medical Sonography (DMS) program as a part-time professor and mentor for current students.

Ray’s passion lies in reproductive gyne and obstetric imaging.  A large portion of her patient population is women undergoing diagnostic workups with a history of infertility. Transvaginal ultrasound imaging is imperative in recognizing these patients’ issues and provide a diagnosis that can yield treatment and results. Through her work experience, Ray has developed an expertise in pelvic imaging and works closely with OBs & gynaecologists to enhance a patient’s experience in providing the most compassionate care.
