Sonography Canada’s Pre-Budget Submission for 2025-26 Federal Budget
August 14, 2024Sonography is a crucial part of Canada’s healthcare system, yet the profession faces significant challenges, including lack of data on the profession, burnout, recruitment, and retention issues. Despite their vital role, sonographers lack public and institutional recognition. Sonography Canada continues to advocate for better work environments and policies to address these challenges. As part of our Pre-Budget Submission for the 2025-26 Federal Budget we are recommending the following:
- Develop a National Health Profession Promotion Strategy that encourages Canadians to consider rewarding careers in health professions, including diagnostic medical sonography.
a. Extend Student Loan Forgiveness available to family doctors and nursing programs, and more recently to other health professions, to diagnostic medical sonographers to help address the surgical backlog and E.R. wait times in Canada. - Improve existing federal data collected on health professions to ensure that sonographers are counted independently, and not counted as part of other imaging professions.
- Establish a Mental Health Strategy for Allied Health Professions and a Workplace Guidelines and Best Practices Strategy for Sonographers to ensure a healthier workplace.
