Sonography Canada Statement Regarding Recent Allegations in Edmonton, Alberta
January 16, 2025Sonography Canada is aware that a criminal charge has been laid against a member for alleged sexual assault while practicing as a diagnostic medical sonographer in Edmonton, Alberta. We take these allegations with the utmost seriousness; they are deeply troubling and contrary to the standards of professional and ethical conduct upheld by Sonography Canada.
As charges have been laid, this matter is now within the jurisdiction of the court in Alberta. Therefore, Sonography Canada will refrain from commenting on the specifics of the case to avoid interfering with the legal process. We will, however, cooperate fully with the police or the legal process if approached to do so.
Sonography Canada is the national credentialing body and professional association for diagnostic medical sonographers in Canada. We are responsible for establishing professional standards and codes of conduct, administering and issuing credentials, and supporting members in their professional development. We do not have regulatory authority over sonographers in any provincial jurisdiction.
In Alberta, diagnostic medical sonographers are currently unregulated. This means that there is no body with the legally-sanctioned power to oversee the licensing and legal practice of sonographers, nor the means to investigate complaints and/or impose discipline. Sonography Canada advocates for the regulation of sonographers in all provinces and fully supports the ongoing efforts of the Alberta government and the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic and Therapeutic Technologists to regulate sonographers in that province. If enacted, regulation will help to ensure protection for patients and practitioners alike.
Sonography Canada remains dedicated to promoting the highest standards of patient care and professionalism in the field of diagnostic medical sonography. We will continue to monitor the progress of this case as it moves through the judicial process, and subsequently take the appropriate action to review the defendant’s Sonography Canada membership and credential(s).
